Privacy
Catacrawl is a single-player game. It works completely offline. Everything below is either opt-in or only happens when you use an online feature on purpose, and none of it involves your e-mail address or your password. Where a feature has to know who you are — the leaderboard, the cloud save, and run data if you let it — that is your Steam display name and numeric account id, and nothing else.
What the game can send, and when
| Feature | What is sent | When |
|---|---|---|
| Run telemetry | How your runs went: character, level, skills, gear, kills, damage taken and dealt, where and how you died, your operating system and the game version. Tagged with a random player id the game makes up on first start — and, if you play on Steam, with your Steam display name and account id, so that one player’s runs can be told apart from another’s. No e-mail address and no hardware id, ever. | Only if you answered yes to the question at first start. Settings → Privacy turns it off at any time, and has its own switch for the Steam account — you can keep sharing runs without it. |
| Leaderboard | Your display name — your Steam name when you play on Steam, otherwise “Cat-xxxx”, and you can change it to anything — the rung cleared, your clear time, character, level and kills. Your display name is shown to other players. | Only if you answered yes after your first win. Settings → Privacy turns it off; you can rename yourself on the Leaderboard screen. |
| Cloud save | Your save file (progress, items, coins) and, to tell your saves apart, your Steam id (a number). No Steam password or e-mail ever reaches us: Steam signs you in and only tells us the id. | Only after you press "Sign in through Steam" under Settings → Cloud & transfer. Sign out removes the token from your device. |
| Transfer code | Nothing. The code is your save, packed, copied to your own clipboard. | Never sent anywhere by the game. |
What we do with it
Telemetry is read in aggregate to balance the game: where players die, which rungs take too many runs, which skills fall behind. Leaderboard records are shown on the in-game board and on this website. Cloud saves are only ever handed back to the account that stored them. We do not sell, share or combine any of it with other data, and there is no advertising.
Where it lives
The collector is a small server on Cloudflare (Cloudflare Workers and D1, EU/US data centres chosen by Cloudflare). This website is served by Cloudflare Pages and sets no cookies of its own; it uses no analytics scripts.
Steam
If you play through Steam, Valve processes your purchase, playtime and achievements under Steam's privacy policy. The game itself reads only your Steam display name and your numeric account id, never your e-mail address, password, friends or library. It uses them for the cloud save sign-in, for your leaderboard name, and — if you said yes to sharing run data — on that run data. Settings → Privacy has a switch for the last of those.
Retention and deletion
Telemetry and leaderboard records are kept while the game is developed. Your random player id
is stored in your save file; delete profile.lua in the game's save folder (or reset
the character in the hub) and no new record can be tied to the old ones. Turning off “Include
my Steam account” under Settings → Privacy stops the account being sent from then on. To
have existing records or a cloud save removed, send us the player id shown under Settings →
Privacy, or your Steam account name, and we will delete them.
Children
The game collects no contact details from anyone, and nothing at all unless you opt in.
